Genjokoan: A Zen Meditation Workshop

The Genjokoan is a text written by the Japanese Zen master Eihei Dōgen, who in the 13th century introduced the Sōtō Zen school of Buddhism in Japan. Genjokoan can be translated as “Realization of the Present Moment” or “Awakening with the Whole Universe.”

Shobogenzo

The Genjokoan is a chapter from a larger work by Dōgen called Shōbōgenzō, a collection of his teachings and reflections. In this text, Dōgen explores the nature of Buddha and the practice of Zen as it relates to everyday life.

Genjokoan: Awakening in the Present

In the Genjokoan, Dōgen addresses fundamental Zen concepts such as the harmony between awakening and daily life, the importance of fully living in the present, and the transcendence of duality between enlightenment and ignorance. The text is known for its philosophical depth and focus on direct, non-conceptual experience.

This writing has been the subject of study and contemplation within the Zen tradition and has deeply influenced the understanding of Zen Buddhist practice. Many practitioners consider it essential for deepening one’s insight into the nature of reality and the mind.
