The Dharma Zen Workshop Course is an opportunity to learn about the Buddhist texts of Soto Zen and immerse yourself in the principles and practices of Zen Buddhism.
Each workshop is independent of the others, creating a learning experience that covers a wide range of essential topics for understanding and realizing Zen teachings.
By combining theoretical study with practical application, participants can expand their knowledge and connect more deeply with the essence of Zen.
This program is designed for both beginners and experienced practitioners who wish to deepen their understanding of Zen.
Understanding Zen Teachings
Zen Buddhism emphasizes direct experience over theoretical knowledge. The teachings often come in the form of parables, koans, and direct instructions from a master. Soto Zen places a strong emphasis on seated meditation, known as Zazen. Course is based on books:

The Essence of Buddhist Teachings
At the heart of Zen teachings lies the concept of Dharma, which refers to the universal truth and the teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni. By studying the Buddhist texts of Soto Zen, practitioners can gain a deeper understanding of Dharma and how to apply it in their daily lives. The Dharma Zen Course aims to make these teachings accessible and practical.
What to Expect from the Dharma Course
The Dharma Zen Course is structured into nine workshops, each focused on different Soto Zen texts. From the Four Noble Truths of Buddha Shakyamuni to Dogen’s Shobogenzo, these workshops are designed to provide a holistic understanding of Zen teachings, combining study with practice.
Workshop 1: The Heart Sutra
The Heart Sutra is one of the most important texts in Mahayana Buddhism and is central to Zen teachings. This Dharma course workshop offers a detailed study of the Heart Sutra, a dialogue between Buddha Shakyamuni and Sariputra, exploring its meaning and relevance.
Workshop 2: The Lotus Sutra
The Lotus Sutra is another fundamental teaching of Buddha Shakyamuni in Zen Buddhism. This sutra, which discusses the nature of Buddha, has been studied by many Buddhist schools for centuries and continues to be a source of inspiration and guidance for those seeking ultimate truth.
Workshop 3: The Bodhisattva Path
The Bodhisattva path is central in Mahayana Buddhism, emphasizing compassion and the aspiration to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. This Dharma course workshop delves into the Buddhist principles and practices of the Bodhisattva path.
Workshop 4: Bodhicitta – The Spirit of Awakening
Bodhicitta is an altruistic and compassionate attitude that leads to spiritual awakening for the benefit of all sentient beings. In Mahayana Buddhism, the most important motivation for a Buddhist monk is to work for the happiness of others with compassion and wisdom.
Workshop 5: The Ten Stages of Ox Herding
The Ten Stages of Ox Herding are images and poems that describe enlightenment in Zen practice, very popular among Chinese Buddhists. This workshop examines each stage, providing guidance on the path to awakening.
Workshop 6: The Eight Awakenings of Great Beings
The Eight Awakenings help us free ourselves from illusions and attachments that keep us trapped in suffering and ignorance. By practicing meditation, introspection, and compassion, we can transform our lives and achieve the enlightenment of Mahayana Buddhism.
Workshop 7: The Diamond Sutra
The Diamond Sutra is an important text in Buddhist philosophy that discusses ultimate reality and the emptiness of all phenomena. By immersing ourselves in the Diamond Sutra, we can achieve spiritual awakening and transcend duality, according to Buddhist tradition. This is a fundamental text of Japanese Zen schools.
Workshop 8: The Ten Essential Points of Zen
According to Dogen, the Ten Essential Points are principles that guide practice in Zen temples. These points include the necessity of practicing zazen meditation diligently, as well as the importance of compassion and kindness towards all beings.
Workshop 9: The Bodhisattva Precepts
Ultimately, the Bodhisattva Precepts teach us that our actions affect all beings and the world as a whole because we are all interconnected. It is important to follow these rules to avoid harming others and to maintain peaceful and harmonious relationships with them.
