Intensive Zen Meditation Retreat
An intensive city retreat in Zen meditation is a practice held in a city-based center, where participants can take part either fully or partially. It offers a first-hand experience of a Zen retreat, or sesshin, which is a core practice within the Zen Buddhist tradition. This urban retreat allows participants to deepen their spiritual practice while remaining in an urban environment.
What is a Sesshin
During a sesshin—including in the urban retreat—practitioners commit to a rigorous schedule that includes periods of seated meditation (zazen), walking meditation (kinhin), formal meals, mindful manual work (samu), Dharma talks by the Zen teacher, and limited free time. The sesshin takes place in an atmosphere of silence and contemplation, aiming to deepen the meditation experience and lead participants to a greater understanding of the nature of mind and reality. All of this is carried out within an urban retreat setting. The sesshin is an opportunity to immerse oneself fully in spiritual practice and attain greater clarity and spiritual awakening. It is a deeply transformative experience.
Introduction to the Urban Zen Retreat
A distinctive feature of the urban retreat is that it allows for partial participation, making it suitable for beginners. However, to attend, it is essential to have completed a free introduction session with Zen Kannon and to have practiced zazen for a few months, either in person or online at the Zen Kannon center. In any case, if this is your first retreat, it is recommended to consult the center’s teachers to assess whether your preparation is adequate.
