Meditate with us online

At Zen Kannon we offer Zazen Zoom: online Zen meditation sessions so you can practice from home, regularly and in community. Connect in silence, share presence, and cultivate the awakened mind from wherever you are.

We recommend that before using the online meditation sessions, you attend a free in-person introduction to meditation. The first time is much better in person so that the teacher can see you directly and offer guidance if needed. After that, you can connect online or combine online and in-person practice as you wish.

Instructions for connecting to Zen Zoom

  • Start connecting 15 minutes before the zazen session. Once the session has started, it is no longer possible to enter.
  • It is essential to use your real name on Zoom so that the teacher can recognize you.
  • Before sitting down, place your phone on a tripod or stand, and aim the camera at where you will sit so the teacher can see your full posture from behind, from the floor to your head.
  • Avoid being in the dark: turn on the light if it’s evening.
  • In the attached photo you can see how to place the camera.
  • When entering Zoom, it will ask you to allow audio recognition — click “yes.”
  • After entering, make sure your microphone is on “mute” (bottom left), and adjust your speakers to hear properly.
  • It is recommended that your phone be plugged in so the battery doesn’t run out.
  • Do not talk or greet. Zen Zoom is like being inside the dojo. Avoid using the chat; if you have questions, you can write an email afterwards.

Zen Practice: We follow the sounds of the dojo

  • We begin sitting when the wood block is struck, 15 minutes before zazen.
  • We remain completely still when the large altar bell sounds in a cascade. Commit yourself to not moving, no matter what, as if you were in the dojo.
  • After 30–40 minutes, two bell rings signal it’s time to get up for kinhin (walking meditation).
  • After 5–10 minutes, one bell ring signals we return to seated zazen.
  • After a minute, three bell rings signal we remain still again.
  • The meditation ends when another single bell sounds, after another 30–40 minutes. Until then, we do not move, no matter what. While the drum and wood block are sounding, we also do not move.
