The Way of Zen a walk to Awakening
The way of Zen course is an educational offering within the Zen Buddhism program at the Zen Kannon Center. This course offers an in-depth look at different ways of living the Dharma. The curriculum is designed for meditators who wish to deepen their practice and for those who feel called to explore the bodhisattva path or the path of the Zen monk or nun.
The Three ways of Zen
The way of Zen is a practice of introspection that invites us to recognize and dissolve the ego’s conditioning, with the goal of awakening to reality as it truly is. The course presents the foundations of the three paths: that of the meditator, the bodhisattva, and the monk or nun, all rooted in the practices of zazen, compassion, and mindfulness.
The Bodhisattva way
The bodhisattva way encourages us to generate bodhicitta, the altruistic aspiration to awaken in order to benefit all beings. It is an active and compassionate practice, centered on selfless help and generosity. This path is rooted in classical texts such as the Lotus Sutra and Shantideva’s Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life.
The Zen way of the Monk or Nun
For those who feel the call to go even further, the course also explores the monastic path — a life of simplicity, service, and full dedication to practice. The course examines the differences and similarities between lay life and monastic life. Without a doubt, both paths can lead to liberation if lived with deep commitment. This course is an opportunity to explore which path resonates with you at this moment in your life, within an ethical, communal, and living framework of Zen Buddhism.

Attention is directed to posture and breathing, allowing thoughts to flow without clinging to them, calming the mind and setting the stage for a deeper understanding of the class.
