mindfulness karma

Mindfulness Karma is a module of the Zen Mindfulness course at the Zen Kannon Center, designed to teach the application of mindfulness to actions and their consequences. Psychological distress and suffering are often caused by our own thoughts, words, or actions in the past. Likewise, our thoughts, words, and actions in the present will shape the suffering we might experience in the future. Through mindfulness, we can become aware of this process and begin to transform it.

What is Karma?

The word “karma” comes from Sanskrit and refers to the law of cause and effect, based on the belief that a person’s actions have repercussions in their life, either in this one or in future existences. In Zen Buddhism, the concept of karma emphasizes personal responsibility and the connection between a person’s actions and the consequences they experience. Positive actions are said to generate “good karma,” potentially leading to positive outcomes in the future. On the other hand, negative actions generate “bad karma,” potentially resulting in negative consequences.

Mindfulness Karma

Zen meditation and mindfulness are the best ways to become aware of our karma. By practicing mindfulness, we can become conscious of each moment of existence, remaining aware of the body, sensations, emotions, and everything that arises in the mind. By observing thoughts and feelings as they arise—whether during meditation or in daily mindfulness practice—we can see their karmic interdependencies and contemplate karma itself.

Transforming Karma

Once we become aware of karma, the possibility of transforming it arises. Zen practice provides many resources for achieving this transformation, which will be explored throughout the course.
