What’s the Difference Between Meditation and Mindfulness?

Meditation and mindfulness are closely related practices, but they have key differences.
Meditation is a technique aimed at training the mind to reach a state of full awareness and calm, often by focusing on the breath, an object, or a mantra. It’s practiced regularly and includes various approaches such as mindfulness meditation, transcendental meditation, or guided meditation.

Mindfulness, on the other hand, is a type of meditation focused on consciously paying attention to the present moment, without judging thoughts or sensations as they arise. It’s about being fully present in each moment, observing thoughts and emotions without identifying with them. Mindfulness originates from Buddhist meditation and can be practiced in daily life, not just during formal meditation sessions.

In short, meditation is a broader practice encompassing different techniques and approaches, while mindfulness is a form of meditation that applies full awareness to the present moment of everyday life. Both can benefit mental and emotional health and complement each other for greater overall well-being.

Why a Zen Approach to Meditation and Mindfulness?

A Zen approach to meditation and mindfulness is rooted in Zen Buddhist philosophy, which seeks the awakening of awareness through meditation and full presence in the here and now. This tradition emphasizes simplicity, stillness, and non-judgmental observation of thoughts and emotions as they arise.

Zen invites us to be fully aware of each moment, to be present in the here and now without worrying about the past or the future. Through Zen meditation, we learn to observe our thoughts and emotions without identifying with them, which allows us to develop greater mental and emotional clarity.

Furthermore, the Zen approach to meditation and mindfulness supports the cultivation of compassion and kindness — toward ourselves and toward others. In practicing mindfulness, we learn to accept our imperfections and those of others, and to relate with empathy and compassion.

In short, the Zen approach offers powerful tools for cultivating inner peace, mental clarity, and compassion, helping us live more fully and consciously in every moment of our lives.

En resum, l’enfocament zen a la meditació i el mindfulness ens brinda eines poderoses per cultivar la pau interior, la claredat mental i la compassió, cosa que ens permet viure de manera més plena i conscient en cada moment de la nostra vida.
